Refugee Week 2023

From June 19th to 25th, we join others across the globe in celebrating Refugee Week. This is an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of refugees, asylum seekers and all those fleeing persecution, in order to foster compassion and understanding within our communities. Refugee Week goes beyond surface-level calls for human rights protection by recognising and celebrating all that refugees and asylum seekers contribute to society.

At Teneu Legal, we’re proud to stand in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers. We recently undertook a range of training sessions in Glasgow with the Unity Sisters, a group of migrant women who are peer advocates. These sessions – carried out in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University and MILK café as part of the 'Our Rights Our Communities' initiative – aimed to empower migrant women to support other migrant women within the community, doing so effectively and within the confines of the law.

Championing Change

During Refugee Week, it is essential to acknowledge the impact of activist groups such as the Unity Sisters in shaping the conversation surrounding immigration policies. Public scrutiny has seen one of the most controversial elements of the Nationality & Borders Act 2022 rowed back in recent weeks – the Act’s two-tier approach differentiated between asylum seekers entering the UK by ‘regular’ and ‘irregular’ routes, effectively denying asylum to asylum seekers arriving in the UK via small boats.

Such developments demonstrate the importance of speaking up and standing united against policies that may perpetuate injustice. As the Illegal Migration Bill progresses through the UK legislature, it becomes even more crucial to advocate for fair and compassionate immigration laws.

About Teneu Legal

We firmly believe that legal services can be delivered differently, bridging the gap between profit-focused LLPs and the underfunded legal aid sector. Through our socially-minded approach, we strive to improve access to justice, increase legal knowledge, and empower society to create positive change, during Refugee Week and beyond.
